I am all about beauty foods that make you both feel and look good! Last winter, I was thrilled to be asked to appear on Nikita Chopra’s new show, Naturally Beautiful on Veria Living and share some of my favorite beautifying recipes. I was quite pregnant at the time and vividly remember scrambling to find a dress that both fit over my belly AND was TV worthy!

Take a look at my  recently aired segment here:

Happy Thanksgivmukah

Happy Thanksgivmukah!

With the first night of Hanukkah tonight, and Thanksgiving tomorrow I feel suddenly in full on holiday mode. This year is extra special because each holiday will be Hermione’s first!

For Hannukah we will be lighting this adorable elephant menorah, opening a few small presents, eating my Sweet Potato Latkes (if you are making them for a baby make sure to omit the salt!), and saying our own version of the Hanukkah blessing.

While neither Doug nor I are religious, we are making a big effort to raise Hermione with the traditions of our parents. Minus the G– parts.  In case you are in a similar boat our Hannukah blessing goes like this :

Blessed is the time of our celebration, time of light for hope in the world.

May all beings everywhere be happy and free.

We then plan to sing this song that we sing in Hermione’s yoga class and at bedtime. It is sung to the tune of “The Wheels of the Bus”

My little light bows to your little light, your little light, your little light.
My little light bows to your little light. Namaste.

Tomorrow Doug and I will be doing our annual Turkey Burn (90 minute class) at Soul Cycle which I cannot wait for! At last year’s Turkey Burn I was pregnant! What a difference a year makes! This year I have so so much to be grateful for from my beautiful baby girl, to my husband, to my family’s continued health. It certainly has been a wonderful year.

We are having Thanksgiving dinner at Soho House with Doug’s whole family. Hermione has a special party dress picked out for the occasion… stay tuned for photos!

While we will be eating Thanksgiving dinner out this year if I were cooking here are a few healthy recipes I would certainly include!

Truffle Roasted Brussel Sprouts

Stuffed Acorn Squash

Kale Salad with Apples and Walnuts

Thanksgiving Tomatoes

Parsnip Steak

Crustless Pumpkin Pie

Pumpkin Spice Macaroons

Looking for the taste of Thanksgiving in a cup? Try this smoothie over the long weekend! Yum!

Yoga for Bellies

As Hermione approaches seven months my pregnancy is starting to feel like a distant memory. What I do remember ( besides the swollen feet!) is that nothing felt better on my body than exercise. Being able to spin or do yoga everyday really helped keep me strong, flexible and in shape for her birth. While I was mostly able to keep up my normal routine, towards the end I did switch my regular yoga practice for pre-natal yoga. When you can no longer invert, twist or lay on your belly regular yoga becomes difficult!

Along with my pre-natal yoga classes I also practiced yoga at home often. Today, MindBodyGreen is featuring a pre-natal yoga video I shot with Latham Thomas aka MamaGlow back when Hermione was still in my belly! Head over to MindBodyGreen to check it out and hit your mat!

Beauty Food Gratitude

On Tuesday I co- hosted another Beauty Food Supper Club  with Rebecca Casciano and Jolene Hart at Sun In Bloom. Our guests were treated to four delicious courses of beautifying foods that left them all glowing by the evening’s end. This was the first Beauty Food Supper Club we have done since I was pregnant and it felt so great to be back at it with these wonderful ladies! You might note that my baby bump from the last two dinners has now shifted onto Jolene!

As always uber-talented chef Aimee Follette came up with a mouth watering menu starting with a Sweet & Spicy Sweet Potato Soup & Fall-Inspired Spring Roll.

The entree was a gorgeous 4 Seasons Salad featuring  Roasted veggies, massaged kale, avocado, quinoa, red grapes, black figs and spiced germinated walnuts dressed in herbaceous lemon vinaigrette

For dessert guests had a choice of Raw Pumpkin Cheesecake with a Rich & Smooth Chocolate Sauce or Apple Tart with Banana Ice Cream. I tried both!

Before leaving every guest was treated to a deluxe gift bag with goodies from our amazing sponsors  Hail MerryLa Bella FiguraYoungblood Mineral CosmeticsKusmi Tea, and W3ll People. To stay up to date on the details of our next Beauty Food Supper Club be sure to like our new Facebook page. I hope to see you at the next one!

Easily Amused

Babies are easily amused. At least mine is. I don’t really know much about anyone else’s. It amazes me how a simple game of “Photobomb” (our version of Peek-A-Boo) can keep Hermione laughing! Recently she is also very into the swings at the playground, reading stories, and lots and lots of naked time!

A few weeks ago, Hermione’s amazing nanny and BFF Merry ( see her awesome recipe here) started making her these little “Jars of Wonder.” Using small glass spice jars  and a mix of soap, water and glitter she created a variety a pretty combinations that Hermione is addicted to! She loves staring at the glitter as it slowly moves through the jar. She loves them even more when the light hits just right and they sparkle. Baby diamonds!

We also filled one of the jars with homemade non-toxic bubbles which are incredibly fun at the park!

Just like her mom, Hermione is loving leading a Clean, Pure and Simple life. No crazy plastic toys for my girl!

World Vegan Day

Happy World Vegan Day! I can’t think of a better day to come after Halloween. Whether you overindulged in candy or not, today is a great day to reset and get back to healthier, cleaner eating habits! As I am always saying, being healthy does not have to be hard work. You do not have to go on a 30 day juice cleanse in order to take good care of your body. If you focus your everyday diet around plant based foods you will find that you will be out of the “detox to retox” cycle. So get rid of all that candy ( here are some places to donate it ) and move on with your life. I promise, once it is gone you won’t miss those bite size bars of sugary poison!

When it comes to plant based meals, squashes off all sorts are a winner for me. I love zucchini in the summer and sweet potatoes in the winter! Japanese yams are my favorite variety of sweet potato. Their flesh is so sweet that I often roast them as “cookies” and eat them for dessert! This recipe for Miso Roasted Japanese Yams has been a dinner staple in my house for a few falls. They are super easy to whip up and keep well for a day or two if you want them as leftovers ( delicious either hot or cold!) Enjoy!

Miso Roasted Japanese Yams

  • 2 medium japanese yams
  • 3 scallions diced
  • 3-4 T sweet white miso paste
  • 1-2 T water
  • 5 drops liquid stevia
  1. Preheat oven to 400
  2. Cut yams into 1″ cubes
  3. In a small bowl combine the miso, stevia and water. The mixture should be a slightly thick yet still liquid. You may need to add more or less water to get the right consitency.
  4. Toss yams with the miso sauce and half of the scallions until throughly coated.
  5. Roast yams for 25-30 minutes until soft and slightly brown.
  6. Toss yams with remaining diced scallions before serving.

Who says dogs and cats can’t get along?

How will you be celebrating? Doug and I had a late night last night watching the Red Sox win the World Series so I think we will take it easy tonight. Hermione is still a little young for Trick-or-Treating so we may just watch a scary movie after she goes to bed!

If you are looking for some healthier Halloween treats to try might I suggested some Chocolate Almond Butter Cups? Or maybe Pumpkin Spice Macaroons?

Are you an uber-health conscious mom like me? Although it is far from an issue for me yet one day Hermione will want to go out Trick-or-Treating and I will have to wrangle all of that candy away from her. While I am secretly hoping she won’t have a desire for sugar after being raised the Clean, Pure and Simple way I know this may not be the case! If she is hesitant to part with all of that sugary grossness I will try telling her about the Switch Witch! According to a girlfriend of mine the Switch Witch is the Tooth Fairy’s sister. If your wee one leaves all of their candy out for her they will be surprised  with a present in the morning! Pretty cool huh? All of the fun of dressing up and Trick-or-Treating with none of the sugar!

It’s back!!! After a brief hiatus over the summer I am thrilled to announce that the Beauty Food Supper Club is back! Our next dinner Beauty, Food Gratitude will be on November 12th. As always we have some amazing gift bag sponsors lined up including La Bella FiguraYoungblood, W3LL People, Kusmi Tea, and Hail Merry.

Tickets are available here and you can also “like” our Facebook page for update on this and other upcoming Supper Clubs!

Yesterday we hit a baby milestone. Hermione’s first cold :( With the sudden drop in temperature and her first subway ride (to get her Passport!) I suppose it was bound to happen. A baby with the sniffles is a pretty sad sight, but my girl is quiet the trooper and has still been all smiles despite being under the weather. Luckily it has not really disrupted her days and nights too negatively. She just seems to want to nurse more (for comfort AND hydration), and is even cuddlier than ever.

There may be no cure for the common cold but I have discovered a few helpful things to make Hermione feel much better.

Saline Drops

Saline is great for loosening up mucus. I just lay Hermione on her back and squirt a few drops in each nostril to help get things moving!

Nose Frida

Since most people do not master blowing their own nose until age 3, the NoseFrida is very helpful for snot sucking! Don’t worry… there are little filters so you don’t actually inhale any baby boogers!

California Baby Eucalyptus Ease Bubble Bath

Hermione gets a bath every night before bed but last night I made it extra special with California Baby’s Eucalyptus Bubble Bath. Instead of bathing her in her bathtub on the kitchen counter I got into my tub with her and filled it with soothing eucalyptus bubbles. I also steamed up the bathroom by running my shower for about 20 minutes with super hot water. Into the shower went even more eucalyptus bubble bath which made the whole bathroom into a soothing steam room that really helped relax her for bedtime.

Personal/Portable Ultrasonic Cool Mist Humidifier

In order to keep Hermione’s room moist overnight I put this little humidifier next to her crib. I like that is does not have complicated filters to change and many parts to clean!

Chamomile Tea

Yes, my baby drinks tea! Chamomile is as soothing for babies as it is for grownups. I brew a super weak cup, let it cool completely and give Hermione very small amounts in a medicine dropper. I have also been soaking a burp cloth in chamomile tea and freezing it for her to gnaw on which she loves!

Badger Balm

Badger Balm is a great decongestant! I rub a small amount on Hermione’s chest and the soles of her feet. Make sure to put little socks on Badger Balm’ed feet so none gets in baby’s mouth (Hermione LOVES to eat her feet!)

Umcka Cold Care Original Drops

On the rare occasion that I get a cold I always take Umcka to shorten it’s duration and severity. Since I am nursing our pediatrician suggested I take Umcka while Hermione has a cold so that it’s benefits can be delivered to her via my milk. Herbal and homeopathic remedies are best given to babies via breast milk which allows your body to deliver a not too strong dose to your baby.

Echinacea and Goldenseal

Similar to Umcka I takes Echinacea and Goldenseal whenever I am under the weather. It helps boost my immune system and fight off colds. Hermione has been getting her dose via mommy!

SISSY + MARLEY NEST- HERMIONE’S ROOM

As soon as I discovered I was pregnant I began thinking about nursery design. Turning my home office into a baby’s room was an exciting and slightly daunting process. I did not want the room to end up looking “babyish” and not fitting in with the aesthetic of the rest of our home. I also knew boy or girl I wanted to hang on to my purple chandelier and have elephants heavily featured. I love purple and elephants. Love.

A google search for “baby elephant nursery” lead me to discover Sissy+ Marley and their NEST service for nursery and children’s interior design. Known for their exquisite taste, unique finds, and drool worthy nurseries I was thrilled to work with Chelsea and her team on Hermione’s room.

I may be biased but I think my little girl ended up with a stunning room. Filled with tons of elephants, hand made dolls, and closet that rivals my own I know my little girl will love her room for years to come. I particularly love the Sissy + Marley for Jill Malek Baby Elephant Walk wallpaper; it makes the room so magical! The best part is the sophisticated yet whimsical design can easily grow with her so no need to redecorate once she is a little older.

Sissy + Marley are featuring Hermione’s room on their blog all this week so be sure to check it out for all the details of Hermione’s nursery and how to get the look!
